“Passing the American Jobs Act”

In this week’s address, President Obama urged Congress to pass the American Jobs Act without delay so that businesses will be able to hire more workers and every American who wants a job will be able to find one. The President’s jobs bill keeps cops on the streets and teachers in the classrooms, cuts taxes for small businesses, and puts construction workers back to work without adding to the deficit. All Americans who agree with the President’s plan should call their elected officials and tell them that it’s time to pass the jobs bill, which will ensure that everyone pays their fair share and that we live within our means as we help the economy continue to grow.

Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, Bachmann, Paul and the others onstage in Tampa all had the same prescription for the economy: Cut spending, cut taxes and let the wealth that results trickle down to the less fortunate.
They betrayed no empathy for, or even curiosity about, the Americans who depend on the spending that would be cut. They had no kind words — in fact, no words at all — for teachers, firefighters and police officers who will lose their jobs unless cash-strapped state and local government receive federal aid. Public servants, the GOP candidates imply, don’t hold “real” jobs. I wonder: Do Republicans even consider them “real” people?

Watch as a 71-year-old man is taken to the ground, handcuffed and led away after questioning the veracity of Republican Representative Paul Ryan’s statement that most of our country’s debt comes from entitlement programs. Rep. Ryan’s response to the unfortunate situation? “I hope he’s taking his blood pressure medication.”
You mean his blood pressure medication which was paid for by one of your entitlement programs?

Had enough 9/11 yet?
President Obama moved his podium into the Rose Garden this morning to announce that he had sent the American Jobs Act to Congress and to once again ask them to pass it quickly. They won’t, of course. The Republicans are still, as always, playing politics. They figure they have the President on the ropes, so why hand him a victory now? As everybody now knows, they would rather see this country go down in flames than give this black Democratic president what could be perceived as a victory.

“Coming Together as One Nation to Remember”

In this week’s address, President Obama marked the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks and paid tribute to the first responders, those serving our nation in the military, and those who lost their lives on that tragic day. In the difficult decade since 9/11, our nation has stayed strong in the face of threat, and we have strengthened our homeland security, enhanced our partnerships, and put al Qaeda on the path to defeat. As we look to the future, we will continue to prove that the terrorists who attacked us are no match for the courage, resilience, and endurance of the American people.

I just witnessed our President deliver what I believe to be the most powerful speech of his first term thus far. He introduced to a joint session of Congress (and the American people) the American Jobs Act. Everything he said and every proposal he made, to me, seemed like common sense. As he reminded the members of Congress several times during the speech, these are all proposals that have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans in the past. There is no conceivable reason why both chambers should not be able to pass this legislation right away. (Though I am sure our Republican friends will find several reasons.)
The candidates for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination got together beneath the wings of Ronald Reagan’s Air Force One jet airplane and held a “debate.”
Rick Perry showed up, though I have to wonder what state he lives in. He sure doesn’t live in my Texas.

The one thing that kept going through my mind as I watched the parts I did subject myself to was “Is this really the best the Republicans have to offer?” I mean, really, this is the cream of their crop? How very, very sad for them.
(Doesn’t Perry look like he’s about to draw his six-shooters?)
