Cartoon of the day

I realize we usually do this on Fridays, but this one is sort of topical today and besides – I wanted to get that Letterman nonsense off the top of the page…

I haven’t posted yet about the Iranian election. I still haven’t managed to convince myself that we have much room to talk after what happened here in the fall of 2000.

(Does anybody actually remember who “K. Harris” was/is?)

Wasn’t she the attorney general for Florida during the hanging chad fiasco in the 2000 election? I agree that we don’t have much room to talk after 2000 but at least it didn’t get that out of hand in our country, although the way our political system has been since 2000, we could start having riots here.

@randy : Close. She was the Secretary of State. She was the official charged with ensuring that the election in the state was run correctly and legally. She was also co-chairman of the Bush/Cheney campaign in the state. We all saw what a great job she did. She was rewarded for her efforts with a seat in the House of Representatives, but her ambitions got too big for even the Bushes when she decided she wanted to move on to the Senate.

The moment I saw the cartoon, I laughed out loud. I sure remember K. Harris.

As to Iran, it is very complicated. Yes, we as a nation might not have a lot to say after 2000 and after Iran/Contra. I’m not sure that we, as a nation, saying much matters anyway.

Yet, we, as individuals who love democracy should be standing up and saying something. I’ve been blogging a bit about it on my blog as I follow closely what is going on in Iraq.

As a final note, there is one cartoon that I particularly liked. It was on TwitPic but appears to have been taken down. It showed students on the street of Tehran fighting for Democracy with one saying “We reject the American Lifestyle”, alluding the the lack of response to the 2000 Election results.

I remember K. Harris all too well. She was a Bush/Cheney partisan who helped steal the election away from Al Gore. The political cartoon was very poignant, and brought back to mind that terrible November day when the will of the people was thwarted. If it can happen in America, it can happen anywhere; like Iran. We have no room to talk.
