Weekly Address 04-25-09

Posted by Len on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 10:57 am CT in Politics

From the White House website:

This week the President reiterates a theme that has been a hallmark of his career, namely that “old habits and stale thinking” will simply not help us solve the new and immense problems our country faces. Listing off several specific changes he intends to bring, he describes his guiding principle: “To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative. That will demand new thinking and a new sense of responsibility for every dollar that is spent.”

Watch the video of the President’s address below or read the full text, as prepared for delivery, after the break.

Friday Night Cartoons 04-24-09

Posted by Len on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 5:00 pm CT in Humor,Politics

Though our conservative friends may disagree (they do have a tendency to disagree with just about everything), it is Friday evening once again. That means that it is once again time to post Friday Night Cartoons, a collection of the best, in this blogger’s opinion, political and editorial cartoons published during the week just ending. If you have been here before, you know the drill. If not, just click on the cartoons to make them bigger or to start a manually-controlled slide show (pay attention to the icons that will appear at the bottom of your browser window). Enjoy.

Do the crime, do the time

Posted by Len on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm CT in Politics,Republicans

President Obama’s pronouncement today that he may be open to the prosecution of the officials in the Bush administration who drafted the legal justifications rationalizations for “harsh interrogation methods” (the latest euphemism for torture) has sent Karl Rove and Dick Cheney running for the nearest microphones and television cameras as quickly as their chubby little legs would carry them. Expect Condoleezza Rice to be joining them soon.

I, like most of my liberal brethren, am of the opinion that anybody who had anything to do with illegal activities should be open to prosecution — from those who authorized the activities to those who carried them out. I find it difficult to believe that there was anybody in that chain who was not aware that what they were doing was not legal. It is a truly frightful thought that anyone that clueless would be in a position where they are in any way responsible for the safety and security of our country.

If you don’t want to do the time, don’t do the crime. It really is just that simple.

Earth Day 2009

EARTH DAY, 2009

– - – - – - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

The story of the United States is inextricably tied to our vital natural resources. As we enter a new era filled with challenges and promise, we must protect our land, wildlife, water and air — the resources that have fueled our growth and prosperity as a Nation and enriched our lives. Doing this not only fulfills a sacred obligation to our children and grandchildren, but also provides an opportunity to stimulate economic growth.

To achieve these ends, no issue deserves more immediate attention than global warming. Scientists have already observed alarming shifts in the natural world, including thawing permafrost, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels.

Climate change presents a serious test for humankind, but it also provides an opportunity for great innovation and adaptation. The United States has risen to such challenges before, and Earth Day inspires us to transcend differences among nations so we may lead the world in protecting our planet from this global threat.

Americans across the country are working hard to help limit the pollutants that cause climate change and reduce their impact on the environment, but we must do more. Individuals and organizations can plant trees, use energy efficient lightbulbs, drive fuel efficient cars, hold clean-up drives, and teach young people about environmental preservation. Small changes in our daily lives can have a big impact on our environment. Individuals can walk, bike, and use public transportation; buy products with less packaging; and recycle and reuse paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum more often. American families can also save money by choosing energy efficient products, turning lights off, unplugging appliances, and cutting back on heating and air conditioning.

Government and business alike must also take serious and sustained action to protect our valuable natural inheritance. Through investments in scientific research and development, and the vigorous pursuit of alternative and renewable energy, we can create millions of green jobs that allow us to reduce greenhouse gases and excel in a competitive global economy. My Administration is committed to increasing fuel economy standards and putting more Plug-In Hybrid cars on the road, weatherizing millions of homes, and catalyzing private efforts to build a clean energy future. My Administration is also working to achieve a comprehensive energy and climate policy, one that will lessen our dependence on foreign oil, make the U.S. the global leader in clean energy technology, and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

President Theodore Roosevelt emphasized our obligation to future Americans, saying, “of all the questions which can come before this nation, short of the actual preservation of its existence in a great war, there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us.” Heeding President Roosevelt’s call, and carrying forward his spirit of determination, we must commit ourselves to protecting our environment and ensuring the health of our planet so we may share the magnificent blessings of our Earth with our grandchildren.

We do this not only to acknowledge the environment’s central role in the development of our Nation but also to recognize the strong ecological interdependence among nations. History has shown that as we sow, so too shall we reap. Let us rededicate ourselves to a world that provides bountiful harvests for us all not just today, but for many generations to come.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2009, as Earth Day. I encourage all citizens to help protect our environment and contribute to a healthy, sustainable world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-second day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

BARACK OBAMA

The New G-nO-P

Posted by Len on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 at 11:41 am CT in General,Politics,Republicans

Meet the bosses of the new GOP. Look pretty much like the old bosses, don’t they? Except Rush Limbaugh seems to be missing…

(New DNC web ad.)

Our Republicans are a laugh a minute, aren’t they? I still do not understand what gave President Obama the idea that he could work with this bozoes.

Chatty Cheney

We seem to be seeing a lot more of and hearing a lot more from Dick Cheney now than we did while he was running the United States government vice president of the United States…

Rachel Maddow is a national treasure.

At the CIA

Posted by Len on Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 10:23 pm CT in Politics

From the White House blog:

Last week the President released memos issued by the Office of Legal Counsel between 2002 and 2005 as part of an ongoing court case. The memos discussed techniques that were used in the interrogation of terrorism suspects during that period, techniques that President Obama has disavowed. Today the President visited CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia to speak to CIA employees directly. Telling them of his great faith in them, and the faith that the American people have in them, he went on to discuss precisely why he has decided to change interrogation policy for the United States.

Here is video of the President’s remarks (preceded by those of Director Panetta). A full transcript is available after the break.

First Cabinet meeting

Posted by Len on Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 6:35 pm CT in economy,Politics

President Obama held his first official Cabinet meeting this during during which he asked his department heads to trim $100 million from their budgets during the next three months…

Q: A hundred million dollars, isn’t that a drop in the bucket, sir?

THE PRESIDENT: It is, and that’s what I just said. None of these things alone are going to make a difference. But cumulatively they would make an extraordinary difference because they start setting a tone. And so what we’re going to do is line by line, page by page, $100 million there, $100 million here, pretty soon, even in Washington, it adds up to real money.

Here’s video of the press availability immediately following the private meeting. A transcript of the President’s remarks may be read after the break.

Meet and greet

Posted by Len on Sunday, April 19th, 2009 at 4:24 pm CT in Democrats,Politics,Republicans

There are a lot of people on the right who seem to be mightily outraged by this photograph:

obama-chavez.jpg

Yet these photographs did not seem to bother them in the least:

bush_putin.jpg

bush-jintao.jpg

Can anybody explain the difference? Why does the first photograph enrage them so and the second and third photographs elicit no response whatsoever? Do they not all show the leader of the United States of America meeting with another world leader (though it be one that does not share our values and our world view)? What is so different about these three photographs?

Have we now become so isolationist (or is the word “elitist”) that it is no longer proper for the leader of our country to even greet the leader of another country, even though that leader may disagree with us? What would the proper response have been for President Obama to make? Should he have turned his back and walked away? Or perhaps he should have removed his shoe and banged it on the table while shouting “We will bury you!” (Is anybody reading this old enough to get that last reference?)

Our conservative friends on the right are becoming more difficult to understand by the day. They really are.

Update:

Obama says reaching out to enemies strengthens US

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) – Defending his brand of world politics, President Barack Obama said Sunday that he “strengthens our hand” by reaching out to enemies of the United States and making sure that the nation is a leader, not a lecturer, of democracy.

Obama’s foreign doctrine emerged across his four-day trip to Latin America, his first extended venture to a region of the world where resentment of U.S. power still lingers. He got a smile, handshakes and even a gift from incendiary leftist leader Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and embraced overtures of new relations from isolated Cuban President Raul Castro.

“The whole notion was that if we showed courtesy or opened up dialogue with governments that had previously been hostile to us, that that somehow would be a sign of weakness,” Obama said, recalling his race for the White House and challenging his critics today.

“The American people didn’t buy it,” Obama said. “And there’s a good reason the American people didn’t buy it – because it doesn’t make sense.”
