Duncan Hunter is an idiot
Wow. Did you happen to catch CBS’ 60 Minutes this evening? I did. I have to tell you that I honestly was shocked by the ignorance that was on display.
Duncan Hunter (R-California) is an idiot.
Talk about being open, the Royal Navy now allows sailors to march in gay pride parades, in uniform. And gay couples are even eligible for married military housing.
“We aren’t the Brits. We’re not the Europeans. We’re not the Swedes,” says Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, who is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee.
Hunter argues that gays do not belong in the U.S. military because American troops need to be hardened warriors, unlike soldiers in the 15 NATO countries where gays serve openly.
“The Fallujahs of the world, the Ramadis of the world that require heavy combat and lots of fire-fighting capability - those are the places the Americans go. The other countries tend to go to the so-called peacekeeper zones, where they have fewer fire fights and less contact with the enemy,” Hunter says. “And the European nations show little will to send large contingents of their military people into dangerous places.”[..]
Rep. Hunter says with the Pentagon starting to meet its recruiting goals, now is not the time for change. “Would we risk doing away with this system that works, where American families sit around the dinner table and they make a decision that their young man or their young woman is going to go into this military because they share the values of that military. Or should we experiment at a time when our military is totally volunteer, when it’s extremely capable and perhaps lose that capability and perhaps lose those numbers? Perhaps lose those re-enlistments and perhaps lose that effectiveness?” he asks.
This imbecile actually went on national television and said that “American troops need to be hardened warriors, unlike soldiers in the 15 NATO countries where gays serve openly.” Everybody knows that a homosexual cannot be a hardened warrior, just as everybody knows that the soldiers in the 15 NATO countries where gays serve openly are all prissy pansies.
Can you believe that this idiot actually ran for the Republican presidential nomination this year? He actually thought that America would accept his idiocy and his ignorance. Unbelievable. Our Republicans really dodged a bullet on that one!

Can’t help but laugh at blind, hateful, homophobia.
Do you mind if I borrow that video? I saw that tonight and had the same reaction. Hunter’s defense of the policy was totally ridiculous and I wish the reporter had called him on that crap.
@Andy :
Not at all. I have added links at the bottom of the post where you can download them.
Those statements make think he think all gays are weak and can’t handle firing an ak 47. There are gays probably on the front lines right now being just as brave and hard as the soldier next to him. When will people realize gay people don’t hit on straight people. this homophobia is holding from this country back in the 19th century
Thanks, Len.
Sadly, there are a lot of Americans who accept his idiocy and his ignorance.
Maybe one day we’ll catch up with the rest of Europe regarding gay rights and true separation of church and state.
Obviously he’s never been outside of a Target at 7:55am the day after a holiday (when the seasonal goodies are first at 50% OFF) - now *that* is a combat situation!
All kidding aside, it’s sad that as a “leader” of the world, we are seen as such a narrow-minded bigoted country on a global scale because of idiots like this.
My question is: it’s okay for our troops to proudly serve next to gay troops from other countries, but not be proud about their own identity? That makes no sense to me whatsoever.
This is just crazy talk from Duncan Hunter, and I’m glad that someone like this didn’t even get close to the nomination.
Anyways, has he seen some gay Americans - I mean, they are some of the more fitter people in this country.
My view though I guess would be Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, as there are some members of the military that might have the same view as Duncan Hunter, and we wouldn’t want to compromise teamwork just because someone feels uncomfortable, but I guess if the situation gets to the point where it’s fight or die no one should really care, as gay Americans are Americans, and I’m sure they love the freedom to be gay, unlike in other countries where there are no gay people.
I think it’s mostly old men who talk like that ??? Shows how OLD he is !!!
I hope the young guy is the next president
@Bradley Hankins :
There are gay people in every country on the planet, just as there are straight people in every country on the planet. Being gay, in and of itself, does not require freedom. I don’t think the genetics that make you gay or straight really care whether you are “free” or not.
According to President Ahmadinejad of Iran, he has no gay people.
It wasn’t really a serious kind of thing, I was just kind of referring to that.
@Bradley Hankins : Didn’t mean to offend, Bradley. As we saw with that whole New Yorker magazine cover kerfuffle today, it sometimes is difficult to discern when someone is trying to be funny.
Oh it’s no problem. Some of the stuff I find humorous can come off wrong with someone else.
