Texas showdown: Dems agree to CNN-Univision debate

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton accepted invitations Monday to appear at a CNN, Univision, and Texas Democratic Party presidential debate scheduled for next week in Austin at the University of Texas.

The February 21st debate will air live on CNN and CNN International from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET. At 11:30 p.m. ET, the debate will air in Spanish on Univision.

Journalists from CNN and Univision will question the candidates, and the debate will be moderated by a CNN anchor.

Please, anyone except Wolf Blitzer! Even Larry King would be better. But, I digress…

Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont will all hold presidential primaries on March 4. If you believe what most of the pundits and talking heads are saying, Ohio and Texas are must-wins for Mrs. Clinton if she is to remain competitive in the race for the Democratic nomination.

I have lived in Texas for the past 34 years. This is the first time that my vote in an election may actually count for something. I have always persisted in voting knowing full well that my vote made no difference. Perhaps my persistence is beginning to pay off.

(I have yet to decide, by the way, for whom I will cast my vote. That is why you’ll notice graphics for and links to the websites of both candidates in the left column. In my opinion, both are qualified for the office and both have qualities that would be good for our party and our country. [There is no doubt that either of them would be infinitely better than that old guy who was defeated by George W. Bush eight years ago.] It is not an easy decision. Thankfully, I still have a few weeks in which to make it.)

MSNBC really screwed up, and now they’re missing out on this debate, which should be quite interesting.

I was on the fence and decided to ask myself exactly what Obama was going to change and specifically what was he hoping for. Then I went to the two candidates’ web sites only to find very detailed and specific plans on Clinton’s site and only very general plans and lovely words on Obama’s. My decision was made — this woman already had plans ready to go and his weren’t even fully formed. I don’t know about you, but I want some substance this time around. Also, he’s not so new Washington if you ask me. CNN did some exposes that showed how he was not fully honest about the slumlord comment in the last debate, citing he purchased the house next door to the slumlord for about $300k below market value. He also wrote letters of support for this guy when he was in the IL senate. On “Reliable Sources,” they showed how he received a campaign contribution via a company involved in nuclear energy and how he rewrote legislation affecting that industry after receiving that contribution. Doesn’t sound like any big change or new kind of politics to me. He’s just better at making it seem all shiny and new — it helps to practice your MLK intonations and church-like speeches.
