Sen. Craig hires Michael Vick’s attorney

(CNN)–Senator Larry Craig is hiring some big guns from the legal world, including Michael Vick’s lawyer, to represent him in his upcoming legal proceedings. Craig said he has retained Vick’s attorney, Billy Martin, to handle most of his legal affairs. He said he has retained Stan Brand, who represented Major League Baseball in connection with the congressional investigation into Major League Baseball’s steroid policies, to handle issues pertaining to an investigation by the Senate Ethics committee.

Somewhat anticlimactic, but…

Sen. Larry Craig announces his resignation

Sen. Larry Craig, surrounded by his family, Gov. Butch Otter, State Schools Superintendent Tom Luna and Congressman Bill Sali, resigned from the U.S. Senate, effective Sept. 30.

He thanked his family for supporting him, and thanked Idahoans for letting him serve as senator. “I am grateful for the opportunity they have given me.”

With his wife at his side and Otter standing behind him, Craig said, “It is with sadness and deep regret that I announce it is my intention to resign from the Senate effective Sept. 30.”

Why September 30 and not immediately is somewhat of a mystery. He certainly is not going to accomplish much in the Senate between now and then.

There are a few others who now need to follow Senator Craig’s lead. Are you listening, David Vitter?

Senator Craig has my sympathies. He really does. He is only six years older than me and we are from the same state (though I got out as soon as I could). I can remember when he was elected State FFA President and then National Vice President. My dad was, at the time, an FFA adviser. Craig then went on to be student body president at the University of Idaho, state congressman, United States Representative and finally Senator from the state of Idaho. It is sad to see his career end in this manner, but he really has nobody to blame but himself. He’s been living a hidden secret life all these years and it was bound to eventually catch up with him.
