All the fuss

Posted by Len on Wednesday, April 18th, 2007 at 11:28 am CT in General,Humor

Here is what all the fuss is about…

Letterman had the creator of votefortheworst.com on last night. The guy has without doubt made a lot of money for his efforts, however if he manages to put an end to American Idol, he will have earned every penny of it.

I will disagree with him in one respect, however. I do not believe that Sanjaya Malakar is “the worst.” It takes a lot for a 16-year-old kid to come back week after week and take the crap that the three judges throw at him with the stamina and maturity that he has displayed.

So I’m joining the chorus…. Vote for Sanjaya!

Update: ‘American Idol’ Says Sayonara to Sanjaya.

Oregon House Approves Gay Rights Bills

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon’s gays and lesbians would win the benefits of marriage and protections against discrimination under landmark bills approved Tuesday by the Oregon House.

The two measures go to the Senate, where they are expected to win approval and be forwarded to Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a strong supporter who plans to sign both.

With dozens of gay rights activists looking on from the upper gallery, the two measures won the unanimous endorsement of the House’s majority Democrats, with a few Republicans adding support.

One would enable same-sex couples to enter into contractual relationships that grant them the same benefits offered to married couples under state law. The bill refers to the relationships as “domestic partnerships.”

The other bill would ban discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people in employment, housing and access to public accommodations.

One step at a time.

Hey. We’ve located some more “safe neighborhoods” for John McCain and his buddies to stroll in…

Baghdad Bombs Kill 45; 3 U.S. Troops Die

BAGHDAD (AP) – Six bombs exploded in predominantly Shiite sections of the capital Sunday, killing at least 45 people in a renewal of sectarian carnage that set back the U.S. push to pacify Baghdad.

North of Baghdad, two British helicopters crashed after an apparent mid-air collision, killing two service members, U.K. officials said.

The U.S. military announced three U.S. troop deaths – two soldiers and a Marine killed in separate incidents.

And in the holy Shiite city of Karbala, health officials raised the toll from a bombing Saturday close to one of the sect’s most sacred shrines, saying 47 people were killed and 224 wounded.

Twin car bombs exploded minutes apart in the busy market of Baghdad’s Shurta Rabia neighborhood, a mostly Shiite area in the city’s west. The first blast went off at midmorning in front of a kebab restaurant. Five minutes later, another car exploded nearby as rescuers were evacuating victims. Many women and children were among the casualties, police said.

Shortly after noon, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a minibus near a courthouse in the mainly Shiite northwest Baghdad neighborhood of al-Utafiyah, killing at least eight people and wounding 11, officials said.

Many of the victims were severely burned, an official at the Khazimiyah Hospital said.

About three hours later, a minibus rigged with explosives detonated on a busy street of electronics shops in the predominantly Shiite central Karradah district, killing 11 people and wounding 15, authorities said.

Update: While going through some old files on my hard disk just now I happened upon this Doonesbury cartoon dated January 24, 2005. It seems as apropos now as it did then…

Culture of life?

Posted by Len on Friday, April 13th, 2007 at 11:25 am CT in Politics

I get a kick out of it when right wing Republicans talk about their “culture of life.” Sure they care about your life… when you’re just a couple of cells in a petry dish or when you’re on your death bed. In between, you’re pretty much on your own and best of luck to you.

Bush renews call for ‘culture of life’

WASHINGTON – President Bush, at the national Catholic prayer breakfast, stressed his opposition to easing restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research, a reference to a bill he’s threatened to veto.

“In our day there is a temptation to manipulate life in ways that do not respect the humanity of the person,” Bush said Friday. “When that happens, the most vulnerable among us can be valued for their utility to others instead of their own inherent worth.”

I think perhaps George has seen The Island a few too many times.

CBS Fires Don Imus From Radio Show

Congratulations to Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and all the members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team… You have again proven that freedom of speech is indeed alive and well in the United States of America… As long as you say only things that we like.

As soon as you say something we don’t like or something with which we do not agree, you’re outta here!

The Imus thing

Posted by Len on Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 at 10:14 pm CT in Politics

Leave it up to some fellow in the heartland to put this whole Don Imus “controversy” in perspective…

Imus isn’t the real bad guy.

I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do?

When Imus does any of that, call me and I’ll get upset. Until then, he is what he is — a washed-up shock jock who is very easy to ignore when you’re not looking to be made a victim.

I hope you’ll read the entire column.
