Bush will deny funds to troops

Did anyone other than me catch the irony in this Associated Press story? Here’s the headline:

Bush Seeks Cooperation on U.S. War Funds

So far, so good. It sounds like George W. Bush may be willing to work with the representatives of the people. Here’s the first paragraph:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush said Monday he wants to work with Democrats on compromise legislation to pay for the Iraq war but will carry through on his threat to veto any spending bill that sets a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal.

Hope begins to fade. On the one hand, Mr. Bush says he wants to work with the majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Yet, on the other hand, he states he will carry though on his threat to veto the legislation they have agreed upon.

Further into the report, we lose all hope:

“I have made my position very clear. The Congress chose to ignore it, and so I will veto the bill,” Bush said.

So it’s his way or no way. He has chosen to ignore the will of the citizens of the United States. He will deny funding to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is a price to be paid for electing Republicans to public office. Our country is now paying that price. It is unfortunate that the Republicans still hold enough votes in Congress to sustain Mr. Bush’s veto. In a more sane world, that would not be the case.
