Iraqi TV Says Saddam Hussein Executed

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Saddam Hussein, the shotgun-waving dictator who ruled Iraq with a remorseless brutality for a quarter-century and was driven from power by a U.S.-led war that left his country in shambles, was taken to the gallows and executed Saturday, Iraqi state-run television reported.

It was a grim end for the 69-year-old leader who had vexed three U.S. presidents. Despite his ouster, Washington, its allies and the new Iraqi leaders remain mired in a fight to quell a stubborn insurgency by Saddam loyalists and a vicious sectarian conflict.

Also hanged were Saddam’s half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court.

State-run Iraqiya television news announcer said “criminal Saddam was hanged to death and the execution started with criminal Saddam then Barzan then Awad al-Bandar.”

He’s dead. Do you feel safer?

No, I don’t feel safer, but I live in Los Angeles and I’m desensitized.

I’m more concerned with the talk of a very unfair trial. The man may deserve everything that came to him, but I strongly believe in fair trials.

The trial was for show only, durante vita. There was never any doubt as to its outcome.

The unfortunate myth that will persist is that Hussein was tried, convicted and executed by Iraqis. The Iraqis were mere puppets in this production. All the strings were pulled by the Bush Administration. Saddam Hussein would not have been executed without the express approval of George W. Bush.

His trial was fixed and George Bush approved of the execution personally. Do we need further proof that our own dictator has no problem being judge and jury for entire countries? I know Saddam was a bad man and no one will miss him, but the world is full of bad men that kill people in the name of security.
We have one in our own White House.

Nope don’t feel any safer, and agree with the rest of the bloggers here. Almost 3,000 American lives and billions of dollars later he is dead, don’t get me wrong he done a mighty injustice to his people, but they should have taken care of him from the start.

If we wanted to get involved we could have supplied the resistance to the forces in a supportive way, but we still can’t leave there, or, is killing Saddam victory? What the problem is they can’t define what victory means in Iraq, and we continue to die there.

When justice is served, the world is a better place, indeed.

It’s funny I try and take the approach that if I walk around in fear then the terrorists have won so I can’t say I feel any safer than before.

I do think that it’s a shame that taking his life was the only thing they could focus on - really worse punishment for a man like that was to be left in a cell - cut off from the world and forgotten. That would have been agony for a former dictator.

But ya know it’s all good as long as it wasn’t our governments actually doing the dirty work. Especially in Australia where we are so against the death penalty - we can stand on the sideline and applaud because we are still morally right.

I’m afraid I’m not for the taking of anyone’s life - only justice and once you kill someone they don’t suffer any longer yet the victims will continue to.

Ahhh that’s all too political for me - just ignore it! I got pictures of the Ghostbusters car on my blog!!!!!
