The eighth member of George’s cabinet made his exit today. The bad news: Rumsfeld is staying.
At least now we know that the foreign policy of the second term will not be any different than the foreign policy of the first term… a miserable, bloody failure.
The Bush Beat has a good write-up on the background of our new Directory of Homeland Security. (Why is it I can’t type “homeland” without thinking of Nazi Germany?)

Bush Adamant on Iraq Election Schedule
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush rejected calls for a delay in next month’s Iraqi elections, insisting Thursday that the vote was too important to put off even though violence and chaos still grip much of the country.
“It’s time for the Iraqi citizens to go to the polls,” Bush said.
Bush predicted Iraq’s elections would leave the world “amazed that a society has been transformed so quickly,” but he did not explain why he was so adamant that balloting go forward as scheduled Jan. 30.
A number of Iraqi political parties have urged delay.

Via a diary posted at Daily Kos: what John Kerry did yesterday…
The caption of this photograph reads: “Former U.S. presidential candidate, Senator John Kerry (D-MA), lays flowers on the casket of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Dimitrios Gavriel during his military funeral at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington DC, December 2, 2004. Gavriel, from Haverhill, Massachusetts, died November 19 while fighting in Al Anbar Province in Iraq and his funeral is the 99th ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’ funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. George W. Bush has not attended a single funeral of any solder killed in his war. It’s not like he hasn’t had a lot of opportunities.
