Smear campaign?
The gentleman who writes for Power Line weblog believes that we Democrats are conducting a “smear campaign” against incoming Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman by speculating that he may be gay.
Mr. Mehlman is 38 years old, single, rich and white. There is no girlfriend in sight. Somehow, I doubt he would have much trouble finding one if he wanted one. He refuses to answer any questions about his sexual orientation. He could end all the speculation himself simply by stating “I am heterosexual.”
Why do we even care? For one thing, Mr. Mehlman himself stated that homosexuals are fair political fodder. He works for and promotes homophobic candidates. He is doing everything he can to ensure that homosexuals remain second class citizens in this country. If he is gay, isn’t all that just a bit hypocritical?
The Republicans hate gay people. Don’t they have the right know if one is about to become chairman of their national committee?
For the record, I myself am not running a smear campaign against Mr. Mehlman. My smear campaign is against all hypocritical, incompetent Republicans and George W. Bush in particular, just as Mr. Power Line’s smear campaign appears to be against all Democrats.

It still seems like a cheap shot, maybe being outed will affect his voting record in a positive way? I’m just a happy, cheery dork today, don’t mind me.
You should go back to the source of this story at AmericaBlog. http://www.americablog.org/
Powerline (consistent with their willful refusal to evaluate the truth) fails to see why gay people might object to a gay person working agressively to harm gay people. This is the guy who made gay rights red meat for the red states. If he supported equal treatment under the law, I’m sure gay people would feel very differently about this.
Chuck Muth also commented on the Outing in his DC Confidential .
The fact that someone is gay is not a smear unless they’re hypocritical and self-hating.
Republicans hate gay people? This is the most egregious example of hate speach I heard from a Democrat in quite a few days.
The only people I hear making anti-gay or racist remarks these days are liberals. Let’s get the record straight.
You should be a moderate on the outside looking in at today’s vocal Democrats. There’s a self-perpetuating and absurd paranoia that is going to destroy the Democrat party. This country needs a healthy Democratic party.
CapZap, I believe you are in denial, or are suffering from both long-term and short-term memory loss. Maybe not all Repugs hate homosexuals - I know quite a few who are tolerant of most alternative lifestyles, but the staunch anti-gay folks are almost always Repug. My state delegate in VA, Dick Black, is one of the most hateful of all — he proposes these outrageous homophobic bills (and anti-choice measures) like gay folks can’t adopt; gay folks, or any non-related people other than married couples, can’t qualify for VFHA loans to purchase a home; fights for the antiquated sodomy law that still remains on Virginia’s books. He isn’t the only one — there’s a slew of them here… Anyway, my point is that calling Dems anti-gay when the Repugs are the ones proposing the anti-gay legislation (another VA legislator — Ed Shrock, proposer of the federal House Bill marriage protection act was outed for being gay…). Look, I could care less what you do in your bedroom, please don’t care — or legislate against — what goes on in mine (or my body).
