A ton of bricks

Posted by Len on Sunday, October 31st, 2004 at 9:05 pm CT in Election 2004

“We are fighting the terrorists abroad so that we do not have to face them here at home.”

That’s one of George W. Bush’s favorite lines. He said it again today in Ohio. Forget for the moment the fact that he has nothing else upon which to campaign other than his supposed machoism against terrorism and think about that statement.

I just heard Mr. Bush say it on the nightly news and it hit me like a ton of bricks – practically took my breath away.

Who do we think we are that our lives are so much more precious and valuable than the lives of anybody else on this planet?

On September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden (who is still roaming free, by the way) attacked us on our soil. This happened during the watch of George W. Bush, the man to whom we had given the responsibility to keep us safe. We decided to fight back, but not on our soil. We took our fight to foreign soil. We even took it to a country that had nothing whatsoever to do with the attack on us. We bombed them, we destroyed their homes and businesses, we killed and maimed their husbands, wives and children.

I don’t know where I’m going with this, other than to say that this is what went through my mind when I heard that spiteful man make that incendiary statement tonight.

It wasn’t pleasant.

Go, Pack!

Posted by Len on Sunday, October 31st, 2004 at 1:08 pm CT in Election 2004

via Snopes.com

The Washington Redskins have proved to be a time-tested election predictor. In the previous 15 elections, if the Washington Redskins have lost their last home game prior to the election, the incumbent party has lost the White House. When they have won, the incumbent has stayed in power.

Go, Packers!

(Now leading 20-7 in the third quarter.)

Primary function

Posted by Len on Sunday, October 31st, 2004 at 12:22 am CT in Election 2004

The London Times

The primary function of democracy is not to elect good leaders, since nobody can predict in advance how a politician will perform. It is to eject leaders who have manifestly failed. The ability to remove leaders who turn out to be corrupt, dangerous, outrageously dishonest or manifestly incompetent is the primary privilege and duty of any democracy. And if any leader in our lifetime deserved to be ejected by voters, regardless of their ideology or political persuasion, it is surely President Bush.

I wish there existed a journalist in the United States with the guts to write that.

Update: Maureen Dowd comes close today. Read her column.

A sure sign

Posted by Len on Saturday, October 30th, 2004 at 11:30 pm CT in Election 2004

A sure sign that the Republicans are more than a little worried — they squeezed a smile out of Dick Cheney!

cheney_smile.jpg

(That is a smile, isn’t it?)

(It’s either a smile or he’s having another heart attack – not quite sure which.)

(He may be saying “I see dead people” – look over his left shoulder.)

A little gift

Posted by Len on Saturday, October 30th, 2004 at 4:59 pm CT in Election 2004

From The New York Daily News

“We want people to think ‘terrorism’ for the last four days,” said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. “And anything that raises the issue in people’s minds is good for us.”

A senior GOP strategist added, “anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush.”

He called it “a little gift,” saying it helps the President but doesn’t guarantee his reelection.

Got that? They want you to be afraid in the days leading up to the election. They want you to be very afraid! Your fear is their only hope. They feed on it. It nourishes them and keeps them alive. Kill the monster… don’t be afraid!

Did you also get that the Bush-Cheney campaign thinks that the fact that Osama bin Laden is still alive and breathing and showing up on our TVs is a “little gift” for them? Perhaps they think of the 3,000 people who died on 9/11/01 as a “little gift” for Mr. Bush’s campaign. Perhaps they were, because I can flat out guarantee you that if those people had not died on that day this election would be nowhere as close as it is.

I don’t really think it’s going to be that close. Americans are too smart to fall for the line of crap that Bush-Cheney is feeding them. (Now please go vote on Tuesday and prove me right!)

Note to SS

Posted by Len on Friday, October 29th, 2004 at 9:23 pm CT in Politics

If’n y’all are gonna come a-knockin’ on our door, please come before nine o’clock at night, cuz’n we don’t answer the door after nine o’clock less’n we knows you is comin’.

Update: While we’re on the subject of ridiculous, I think I have to post here what I believe is just about the most redickless thing I have ever read on the internet…

We know where liberals stand on the war in Iraq. Judging by their stance, we know where they would have stood during the liberation of Jews during the 1940′s. We know where they would have stood on the liberation of slaves in the 1860′s and we know they would have stood with Benedict Arnold during the American Revolution. If they don’t believe Iraqis want freedom, how can you be sure they believe that you want freedom?

(Somebody’s been hittin’ the jug!)

Dead or Alive

Posted by Len on Friday, October 29th, 2004 at 8:37 pm CT in Election 2004

On September 17, 2001 George W. Bush held a news conference at the Pentagon…

QUESTION: Do you want bin Laden dead?

BUSH: I want justice. And there’s an old poster out west, that I recall, that said, “Wanted, Dead or Alive.”

It looks like Mr. Bush got what he wanted… bin Laden is alive.

The sheriff didn’t catch the killer. He sent the posse chasing after the wrong guy, even though he knew who the killer was. Do you reelect the sheriff?

Final poll result

Posted by Len on Friday, October 29th, 2004 at 7:14 pm CT in Election 2004

Here are the final results of our presidential preference poll, which are probably as close to the final results of the election as any poll you’re likely to see on TV or in the newspaper…

What are you going to do this coming Tuesday (if you have not done so already)?

Remember, we’ll be conducting our own “exit poll” right here, so be sure to drop by on Tuesday and let us know how you voted.
