President Obama delivered a statement to the press this morning updating them on the war against terrorism. He also had some choice words for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. I don’t know that I’ve ever seem him quite this angry…

Our diversity and our respect for one another, our drawing on the talents of everybody in this country, our making sure that we are treating everybody fairly — that we’re not judging people on the basis of what faith they are or what race they are, or what ethnicity they are, or what their sexual orientation is — that’s what makes this country great. That’s the spirit we see in Orlando. That’s the unity and resolve that will allow us to defeat ISIL. That’s what will preserve our values and our ideals that define us as Americans. That’s how we’re going to defend this nation, and that’s how we’re going to defend our way of life.

Kennedy tribute

The city of Dallas, Texas is planning a memorial event to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza. Here’s the deal, though. Only 5,000 tickets will be made available. Recipients of those tickets will be chosen at random by a computer from all who apply. All ticket holders will then undergo a thorough background check by Dallas Police.

The terrorists have already won. Seriously, could this country get more paranoid?

5,000 tickets available for Kennedy tribute in Dallas

DALLAS — Requests for 5,000 tickets to a John F. Kennedy memorial event in Dallas went online Thursday, beginning a process that includes rigorous background checks and random computer-driven drawings of people who want to attend.

“ The 50th: Honoring the Memory of President John F. Kennedy” is a public memorial planned for Nov. 22, 2013, in Dealey Plaza in Dallas. President Kennedy was assassinated there in 1963. He was the nation’s 35th president.

Dallas Mayor Michael S. Rawlings said security and fair access are key to the tribute, which he said will be “serious, understated and respectful.”

Security is a high priority in this era, given the terrorists attacks on Sept.11, 2001, and the recent bombings in Boston, Rawlings said at a news conference held at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas.

First Assistant Dallas Police Chief Charles Cato said police will conduct full criminal background checks on all people requesting tickets. People can request up to two tickets and each person listed in a single request will be screened.

While ties to extremist groups might cause security concerns, Rawlings said people with varying views about the events leading to JFK’s assassination won’t be discriminated against in the process.

The following comes directly from the event’s official website:

Persons of all ages, including children, must have a ticket to attend. There will not be seating at the event; however, there will be accommodation for persons with disabilities.

Please note:

  1. For security purposes, you will be asked to enter a valid driver’s license/state issued ID number or passport number or social security number on your request form. Two forms of ID are required on the form; please have your numbers ready when you begin the process.
  2. You may request 1 or 2 tickets to the event. Blocks or group ticket requests cannot be accommodated.
  3. You will be notified on the status of your ticket request on or about October 1, 2013. Only those receiving tickets will be notified.
  4. Tickets will not be mailed to you. You may only pick up tickets in person at the American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Avenue in downtown Dallas, on the day of the event, Friday, November 22, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. CST. Each person attending MUST present photo ID, with information that matches the ticket form, when picking up tickets. For security reasons, no tickets can be released without a photo ID. Acceptable photo identification includes driver’s license, state issued ID, school ID or passport.

Yep, no doubt about it. The terrorists have definitely won.

This is getting ridiculous…

Third Letter Sent to President Obama, Similar to NY Mayor Ricin Letters: Officials

A threatening letter was mailed to President Obama that is similar to two letters containing poisonous ricin sent to Mayor Bloomberg and his anti-gun group, officials confirmed Thursday.

The letter, first reported by NBC 4 New York, is being tested for ricin. It was received Wednesday at an off-site facility, and did not reach the White House, according to the Secret Service.

“This letter has been turned over to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force for testing and investigation,” said Brian Leary, a Secret Service spokesman.

The text of that mailing was identical to the letters sent to the mayor and his gun group, which threatened: “what’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you,” police and law enforcement sources said.

One letter was discovered at City Hall’s mail sorting facility at 100 Gold St. on Friday, a law enforcement source told NBC 4 New York. It appeared to contain a pink, oily substance when a mail worker came across it and was immediately flagged as suspicious.

An initial field test didn’t bring up any sign of ricin, a source said. But more preliminary testing Wednesday showed the letter tested positive for ricin.

An identical letter containing ricin was sent to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns headquarters in Washington, D.C. and was opened on Monday, police said.

The mailings put New York City officials on edge; Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said other suspicious letters were investigated at downtown locations, including two at the office of the city’s public advocate, who is a Democratic mayoral candidate, and another near City Hall. Those were said to be unrelated to the ricin scare.

According to law enforcement sources, the three similar threatening letters were postmarked May 20 in Shreveport, La. and sent without a return address or signature. Sources said the NYPD tried to pull fingerprints off the letter discovered at the city’s mail sorting site, but nothing usable was found. Authorities also plan to check for any possible DNA.

It wasn’t known if any viable forensic evidence was discovered on the letters sent to Washington or the White House. All three mailings read in part: “You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns. Anyone wants to come to my house will get shot in the face. The right to bear arms is my constitutional God given right and I will exercise that right till the day I die.”

The letters were all postmarked from Shreveport, Louisiana.

When this person is caught, and he will be caught, some lawyer will probably try to get him off on an insanity plea. That is not what needs to happen here. The cell door needs to be slammed shut and the key thrown away.

People who do this sort of thing have no place in society.

President Obama just concluded an important address on counterterrorism and national security. Here is the video:

The transcript of the address, as prepared for delivery, may be read following the break. You’ll notice he kind of deviates toward the end due to a bit of heckling from one of the co-founders of Code Pink. He handles it quite gracefully, though.

Republican meltdown

Aug 132010

Right wing extremists are now spouting the theory (they call it fact) that pregnant women from the Middle East and from Mexico are coming into the United States for the sole purpose of having their babies and then taking them back home to raise as terrorists that will then return to the United States (as U.S. citizens) and blow the place up. Last night, Anderson Cooper had one of the proponents of that theory, U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on his show. He asked Rep. Gohmert to present any proof that he or his cohorts might possess in support of their theory. He got no proof in response to his request, but he certainly got an entertaining meltdown and tantrum from Mr. Gohmert…

This is what our Republicans do. You are well aware of this if you witnessed any of the so-called town hall meetings from about a year ago. They scream, shout and holler in the hopes that eventually you will tire and give in to them. Thankfully, we have responsible and intelligent journalists like Anderson Cooper who are willing to stand up to their crap.

From the previous evening, Texas State Representative Debbie Riddle:

Watch these videos. Then ask yourself… are these really the people to whom we want to return the keys of government in November? Extremist, alarmist and (I’m sorry) just plain stupid.

Tuesday stuff

I apologize for not posting anything yesterday. There was a lot we could have talked about. I just got a little busy.

We could have talked about the bumbling Times Square bomber. We caught him; he confessed. We’ll probably still spend a few million dollars putting on trial anyway. What’s the point? He said he did it. Take him at his word and lock him in a cell with the Christmas Day underwear bomber. They should get along tremendously. The Republicans, of course, are all up in arms and screaming because we almost let him “escape.” Yep, we let him sit on an airplane for a couple of minutes. Dang near got away from us, he did. A lot of them are also upset because we read him his Miranda rights. Never mind that he is a United States citizen, we should have just shipped him straight to the Dick Cheney Institute of Torture of been done with him. Right, guys? Even Joe Loserman Lieberman is now saying that anyone accused of terrorism should be stripped of their citizenship rights. Why stop with those guys? Why not pedophiles, murderers, jaywalkers or people who run red lights while talking on their cell phones?

Where does the idiocy stop?

It sure didn’t stop with George W. Bush’s FEMA Director, Mr. Michael D. Brown. You may remember him as “Heck of a Job Brownie,” the guy who was instrumental in the Bush administration’s blowing of the federal government’s response to Hurricane Katrina. He went on Fox News to tell the righties that the oil spill in the Gulf was all planned and staged by the Obama administration so they could exploit it for political advantage. What’s really funny is that nobody at Fox News bothered to challenge his lunacy. You wouldn’t expect them to, though, would you?

Then there’s Mr. Machismo himself… the great governor of the great state of Texas, Rick “Goodhair” Perry. You remember him. He’s the guy who used a laser pointed pistol to kill a coyote a week or two ago. (Sarah Palin must be so proud.) He says the British Petroleum oil rig explosion and subsequent gushing of oil into the Gulf of Mexico were an “act of God” and there was nothing that could have been done to prevent it so we should just keep on drilling like nothing happened. There has been talk amongst the tea baggers of this genius running for national office in 2012. What say, Republicans? Palin/Perry in ’12? Now that would be fun! (Almost as much fun as Romney/Huckabee or Limbaugh/Beck.)

All of this stuff happened. I kid you not. You can Google or Bing it if you don’t believe me.

On to Wednesday. What bits of joy and delight will this day bring? I guess we shall see.

P.S. Feliz Cinco de Mayo. Arizona.
