Common Sense Gun Control

President Barack Obama today announced the executive actions he has planned in order to introduce some forms of common sense gun control in the United States.

The Republicans, of course, having been bought and paid for by the gun lobby, will oppose him at every step. This, even though the vast majority of the American people support what he is trying to do.

Please watch this video or read the transcript of the President’s remarks (following the break) before you decide which side of this discussion you will take.

Yes we need more guns

At least 13 people are dead and 20 more wounded in a shooting today at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

President Obama’s statement:

I am waiting for the first Republican to come forward with the claim that the President is “politicizing” this tragedy. Yes, he is. And it’s about time it becomes even more politicized. Action needs to be taken. This is happening way to often is this supposedly civilized country of ours. It has to stop. The Republicans are just going to have to reconcile themselves to the fact that their big fat paychecks from the National Rifle Association are going to have to go away.

I am also waiting for the first idiot to claim that the carnage would have been minimized if the students at the college had all been carrying guns of their own. That, as any person with an ounce of common sense knows, is pure baloney. More guns = more victims. (Update: the idiot has come forward.)

Open carry of firearms is fast becoming the law here in Texas and I have to tell you it scares me to death (no pun intended). I can see the day fast approaching when every little argument is going to be settled by flying lead. I, for one, will be going out of my way to not patronize businesses that welcome firearms in their establishments.

UPDATE: The numbers have been revised to 10 dead (including the shooter) and 7 wounded. Still, way too many and way too unnecessary.

This is getting ridiculous…

Third Letter Sent to President Obama, Similar to NY Mayor Ricin Letters: Officials

A threatening letter was mailed to President Obama that is similar to two letters containing poisonous ricin sent to Mayor Bloomberg and his anti-gun group, officials confirmed Thursday.

The letter, first reported by NBC 4 New York, is being tested for ricin. It was received Wednesday at an off-site facility, and did not reach the White House, according to the Secret Service.

“This letter has been turned over to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force for testing and investigation,” said Brian Leary, a Secret Service spokesman.

The text of that mailing was identical to the letters sent to the mayor and his gun group, which threatened: “what’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you,” police and law enforcement sources said.

One letter was discovered at City Hall’s mail sorting facility at 100 Gold St. on Friday, a law enforcement source told NBC 4 New York. It appeared to contain a pink, oily substance when a mail worker came across it and was immediately flagged as suspicious.

An initial field test didn’t bring up any sign of ricin, a source said. But more preliminary testing Wednesday showed the letter tested positive for ricin.

An identical letter containing ricin was sent to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns headquarters in Washington, D.C. and was opened on Monday, police said.

The mailings put New York City officials on edge; Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said other suspicious letters were investigated at downtown locations, including two at the office of the city’s public advocate, who is a Democratic mayoral candidate, and another near City Hall. Those were said to be unrelated to the ricin scare.

According to law enforcement sources, the three similar threatening letters were postmarked May 20 in Shreveport, La. and sent without a return address or signature. Sources said the NYPD tried to pull fingerprints off the letter discovered at the city’s mail sorting site, but nothing usable was found. Authorities also plan to check for any possible DNA.

It wasn’t known if any viable forensic evidence was discovered on the letters sent to Washington or the White House. All three mailings read in part: “You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns. Anyone wants to come to my house will get shot in the face. The right to bear arms is my constitutional God given right and I will exercise that right till the day I die.”

The letters were all postmarked from Shreveport, Louisiana.

When this person is caught, and he will be caught, some lawyer will probably try to get him off on an insanity plea. That is not what needs to happen here. The cell door needs to be slammed shut and the key thrown away.

People who do this sort of thing have no place in society.

Stuff like this is happening so often these days that it is hardly considered news.

The Republicans have a lot of blood on their hands.

Two dead, five hurt in Texas shooting spree

(Reuters) – A gunman randomly firing from his pickup truck killed one person and wounded five, including the sheriff of Concho County, Texas, on Sunday before the suspect was killed in a shootout with law enforcement, officials said.

Authorities recovered an assault rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from the suspect, who was said to be 23 years old and from North Carolina. The name was withheld pending notification of relatives, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

The statement identified the dead victim as Alicia Torres, 41, who was shot dead in her car, the statement said.

The Texas Rangers, local law enforcement and Texas Parks and Wildlife were investigating multiple scenes in Concho County, about 250 miles southwest of Dallas, following the early morning shooting spree.

The first incident took place about 4:30 a.m. when the suspect opened fire on vehicle near Eden, wounding a woman, who was later hospitalized in San Angelo, the statement said.

The suspect wounded two more people a short time later as they sat in their vehicle outside a convenience store in Brady, and then returned to Eden, where he fired on another vehicle and wounded another person. Those three were treated and released.

About 6 a.m., Torres was found shot to death in her car in Eola.

Some 15 minutes later, Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane encountered the suspect on a highway north of Eden. The sheriff was wounded and taken to a San Angelo hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the statement said.

The gunman was killed in a shootout with a Highway Patrol trooper and game warden who arrived to assist the sheriff, the statement said.

More guns please.

New NRA President

Unbelievable. Be sure to watch the video at the bottom of this post.

The New NRA President Fantasizes About “Whipping” Anti-Gun Opponents

Just in time for its wingnut-filled annual meeting tomorrow, the National Rifle Association is set to install a new president: an Alabama lawyer who laments “the war of Northern Aggression,” calls Barack Obama “this fake president,” and fantasizes about “whipping” opponents of the gun lobby’s agenda.

Jim Porter of Birmingham, a longtime board member whose daddy’s name graces an NRA championship shooting trophy, is expected to take office tomorrow in Houston at a national shindig that will include speeches by Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, and John Bolton.

In addition to bearing a passing resemblance to Pappy O’Daniel, Porter works at his own law firm, where his areas of expertise include “defense of firearms manufacturers” from product-liability lawsuits. His NRA election announcement also identifies him as a “special assistant attorney general for the state of Alabama,” which couldn’t be independently verified by publication time. But if true, Alabama must have one of the few governments that Porter trusts, given his views on those scalawag federals.

(Is somebody standing behind him lighting his farts or what?)

Five year old shoots sister

Just how stupid do you have to be to give your five year old kid a .22 caliber rifle as a gift?

5-year-old boy accidentally shoots, kills 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County

A 5-year-old boy who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the state police.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. at a home on Lawson’s Bottom Road.

The 2-year-old was taken to Cumberland County Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White identified the girl as Caroline Sparks.

He said the children’s mother was at home when the shooting occurred, and the gun was a gift the boy received last year.

“It’s a Crickett,” he said. “It’s a little rifle for a kid. …The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun.”

White said the gun was kept in a corner, and the family did not realize a shell had been left in it.

He said the shooting will be ruled accidental.

“Just one of those crazy accidents,” White said.

Accidental? I don’t think so. This was no accident. At the very least, these parents should be charged with child endangerment and this kid and any others they may have permanently removed from their care. In an ideal world, they would be charged with capital murder.

The worst part of it all is that this kid is going to have to live with the fact that he killed his two year old sister for the rest of his life.

A shameful day for Washington

Extended background checks for gun purchases is supported by 90% of the American citizenry, including 80% of Republicans. Extended background checks for gun purchases was defeated today in the United States Senate by a vote of 46 to 54; 46 against and 54 in favor. As we all know too well, the minority rules in the democracy that is the United States Senate.

President Obama just completed remarks in the White House Rose Garden. I do not know that I have ever seen him quite so angry. He called today “a shameful day for Washington” and called on Americans to vote the people out of office who will not support their will and to vote people in who will. I will add the video and text of the President’s remarks when they become available. (Update: video added at end of post.)

We all have the right to be very angry and extremely disappointed today, and we should be. Please call your Senators and let them know how disappointed you are in the results of the vote on gun background checks in the Senate today.*

All Republicans except four voted against the background checks. The four Republicans who voted in favor were Senators Toomey of Pennsylvania, McCain of Arizona, Collins of Maine and Kirk of Illinois. All Democrats except four voted in favor of the background checks. The four Democrats who voted against were Senators Baucus of Montana, Begich of Alaska, Heitkamp of North Dakota and Pryor of Arkansas.

*I have already called the offices of both of my senators to express my displeasure at their votes today. You should do the same. When you do, there is no need to be belligerent or rude. Just identify yourself to the staff member who answers the phone and let them know you are calling to express your disappointment (or displeasure) in the senator’s vote on gun purchase background checks today. You will likely be asked for your zip code. Give it, then thank the staff member for their time and politely end the conversation.

Our representatives do not know they are not representing us unless we tell them so.

SNL Gun Control Debate

I realize this was meant as humor, but it really just about summarizes where we are right now in reality. The NRA pretty much has this debate bought and paid for.

Reducing gun violence

 Posted by at 22:31  Politics
Apr 082013

President Obama delivered one of the most important speeches of his presidency today. He spoke in Hartford, Connecticut about reducing gun violence…

Here’s what we’ve got to do. We have to tell Congress it’s time to require a background check for anyone who wants to buy a gun so that people who are dangerous to themselves and others cannot get their hands on a gun. Let’s make that happen.

We have to tell Congress it’s time to crack down on gun trafficking so that folks will think twice before buying a gun as part of a scheme to arm someone who won’t pass a background check. Let’s get that done.

We have to tell Congress it’s time to restore the ban on military-style assault weapons, and a 10-round limit for magazines, to make it harder for a gunman to fire 154 bullets into his victims in less than five minutes. Let’s put that to a vote.

We have to tell Congress it’s time to strengthen school safety and help people struggling with mental health problems get the treatment they need before it’s too late. Let’s do that for our kids and for our communities.

Now, I know that some of these proposals inspire more debate than others, but each of them has the support of the majority of the American people. All of them are common sense. All of them deserve a vote. All of them deserve a vote.
