Barbour rules out 2012 presidential run

JACKSON, Miss. — Republican Gov. Haley Barbour bowed out of presidential contention Monday with a surprise announcement just as the 2012 campaign was getting under way in earnest, 18 months before Election Day. The Mississippi governor said he lacked the necessary “absolute fire in the belly” to run.

Barbour’s declaration, unexpected because he had been laying the groundwork for a campaign for months, thins a Republican cluster of no less than a dozen potential candidates to take on Democratic American President Barack Obama.

Any bets on who will be next?

President Barack Obama launched his 2012 re-election campaign this morning with an e-mail message to supporters and this video:

He can now start raising money for his campaign. I have heard speculation that he could raise as much as a billion dollars. He raised 750 million last time.

Perhaps this will light the fire under some Republican butts and get them to actually commit, rather than playing this “maybe I will, maybe I won’t” game they have been playing to this point.

So… are you in?
