Political capital

Just two days following the presidential election of 2004, George W. Bush famously stated “I earned capital in this campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it.”

The Republicans agreed with him. They stated that Mr. Bush had received a “mandate” and should now be free to govern in any way he wished.

Let’s compare, shall we?

In 2004, George W. Bush received 62,040,610 popular votes (50.73%). John Kerry received 59,028,439 popular votes (48.27%). In the Electoral College, Bush won 286 votes and Kerry won 251 votes.

In 2012, Barack Obama received 61,910,594 popular votes (50.6%). Mitt Romney received 58,654,765 popular votes (47.9%). In the Electoral College, President Obama won 332 votes and Governor Romney won 206 votes.

So, if George W. Bush had political capital and a mandate in 2004, what must Barack Obama have in 2012?

Time to break out the crown.

Claiming victory

As you surely know by now, President Barack Obama was elected to a second term yesterday. He won both the popular vote and the electoral college vote. Not only did he win his home state and that of Vice President Joe Biden, but he also won Mitt Romney’s and Paul Ryan’s home states. But enough with the gloating. In case you didn’t stay up last night to see the President’s victory speech, here it is…

As per usual, the transcript of the President’s remarks is below the fold.

Mitt Romney delivered his concession speech shortly before the President spoke. The pundits are calling it a “gracious” concession. I do not agree. See if you do. It seems to me that he spent most of his speech deriding America for being too stupid to elect him as our leader. Not once did he mention President Obama by name. Oh, and Ann would have made a great First Lady.

Congratulations, America. You did a good thing.

If you have not yet voted, what are you waiting for? It is your right and it is your duty. Please, just do it.

President Barack Obama got kind of emotional at his final campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa last night…

Get out and vote. Take your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers with you. You may have to stand in line for a little while, but so what? There are lots of people who wish they could stand in line.

P.S. If you want to watch the entire final campaign rally of Michelle and Barack Obama, here it is…

Tomorrow is Election Day in the United States. If you have not yet voted I hope you will make your way to the polls tomorrow. Of course I hope you vote Democrat, but it is important that you exercise your right to vote no matter how you vote. Just do it. Here’s a little tune that may provide some inspiration.

If you care to follow along, the lyrics are posted below the fold.

W. Mitt Romney disguised an Ohio campaign rally as a collection of canned food for the Red Cross yesterday. Too bad somebody on his staff didn’t find the time to check the Red Cross website

Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints the Red Cross does not accept or solicit individual donations or collections of items. Items such as collected food, used clothing and shoes must be sorted, cleaned, repackaged and transported which impedes the valuable resources of money, time, and personnel.

Meanwhile, President Obama has been busy directing the federal response to Super Storm Sandy. Today, he will join New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) in touring some of the damage suffered by the citizens of that state.

I voted today

Have you voted yet? (Assuming the Republicans in your state still allow it.)

P.S. I should say I think I voted. Being in a Republican-controlled state with electronic voting machines that have no paper trail, one can never be sure.

General Colin Powell served as Secretary of State under George W. Bush. He upset a lot of Republicans back in 2008 when he jumped shipped and endorsed Barack Obama for the presidency of the United States. He did it again this morning in an appearance on CBS This Morning. His reasoning is sound…

While you’re in the video watching mode, Towelroad has the video of President Obama’s appearance on Jay Leno’s show last night.

After the debate

Here’s a little something the news media did not bother to mention last night. Perhaps you were watching after the debate as the Romney family (wife, kids, wives of kids, grandkids) all swarmed the stage to pat each other on the back. It seems that at least one member of the Romney clan had something else in mind. Miles Romney, grandson of W. Mitt Romney, wanted to meet the President of the United States. President Obama, of course, obliged. (Click on the photos to make them bigger).
