“Congress Should Do its Job and Pass a Serious Budget”

From the White House weblog:

In this week’s address, the President emphasized that we need to do everything we can to strengthen economic growth and job creation. This week, despite the fact that more than half of Republicans in Congress voted to shut down the government for the second time in two years, Congress managed to pass a last-minute bill to keep the government open for another ten weeks. That means that in December, we could face yet another Republican threat to shut down the government. The President emphasized that Congress needs to stop kicking the can down the road and do its job. He stressed that Republicans and Democrats need to work together to pass a budget that fully funds the government and reverses the harmful sequestration cuts, and vowed that he would not sign another shortsighted spending bill like the one Congress sent him this past week.

Yes we need more guns

At least 13 people are dead and 20 more wounded in a shooting today at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

President Obama’s statement:

I am waiting for the first Republican to come forward with the claim that the President is “politicizing” this tragedy. Yes, he is. And it’s about time it becomes even more politicized. Action needs to be taken. This is happening way to often is this supposedly civilized country of ours. It has to stop. The Republicans are just going to have to reconcile themselves to the fact that their big fat paychecks from the National Rifle Association are going to have to go away.

I am also waiting for the first idiot to claim that the carnage would have been minimized if the students at the college had all been carrying guns of their own. That, as any person with an ounce of common sense knows, is pure baloney. More guns = more victims. (Update: the idiot has come forward.)

Open carry of firearms is fast becoming the law here in Texas and I have to tell you it scares me to death (no pun intended). I can see the day fast approaching when every little argument is going to be settled by flying lead. I, for one, will be going out of my way to not patronize businesses that welcome firearms in their establishments.

UPDATE: The numbers have been revised to 10 dead (including the shooter) and 7 wounded. Still, way too many and way too unnecessary.
