“Taking Control of America’s Energy Future”

From the White House weblog:

In his weekly address, President Obama discusses progress in American energy and highlights that we are now producing more oil at home than we buy from other countries for the first time in nearly two decades. We reached this milestone in part not only because we’re producing more energy, but because we’re wasting less energy, and as a result, we are also reducing our carbon emissions while growing the economy.

In a press conference today with reporters, President Obama said that insurers could continue offering individual insurance plans for another year even if they don’t comply with the Affordable Care Act’s rules for minimum benefits, conceding that the roll-out of ‘Obamacare’ had “been rough so far.”

Discredited right wing blowhard James O’Keefe has surfaced once more…

2 North Texas Urban League Offices At Center Of ACA Controversy

U.S. Representative Pete Sessions (in whose district your host is unfortunate enough to reside) has already called for congressional investigations into this “controversy” and immediate disbanding of all offices or organizations who are currently assisting people in navigating the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”).

It is unfortunate that our local CBS and ABC affiliates are giving Mr. O’Keefe the publicity he craves. But, this is Texas, after all.

Once again we learn the lesson which CBS’ 60 Minutes so painfully learned last week… You must always investigate and be confident in your source before broadcasting what you may consider to be “breaking news.” It will only come back to bite you in the butt.

Typhoon Haiyan

The recent Republican shutdown of the government of the United States cost the economy of this country at least $24 billion.

The latest estimate I have seen of the cost to the Philippines due to Typhoon Haiyan is $14 billion.

Were it not for the Republican stunt, the United States could pay that entire cost and still have $10 billion left over for other things… like infrastructure, education, medical research, or whatever.

If you’re wondering how you can help the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, NBC Nightly News has several ways listed. You are likely to find at least one with which you will feel comfortable.

You got off easy over the weekend as there was no Sunday reading assignment. For those ambitious enough to go for a little extra credit, here’s a Monday reading assignment. If you’ve been paying attention, not much in this article should be new to you. However, go ahead and read it anyway. You never know when a little wisdom or new knowledge may come your way…

How Republicans Rig the Game

As the nation recovers from the Republican shutdown of government, the question Americans should be asking is not “Why did the GOP do that to us?” but “Why were they even relevant in the first place?” So dramatically have the demographic and electoral tides in this country turned against the Republican Party that, in a representative democracy worthy of the designation, the Grand Old Party should be watching from the sidelines and licking its wounds. Not only did Barack Obama win a second term in an electoral landslide in 2012, but he is also just the fourth president in a century to have won two elections with more than 50 percent of the popular vote. What’s more, the party controls 55 seats in the Senate, and Democratic candidates for the House received well over a million more votes than their Republican counterparts in the election last year. And yet, John Boehner still wields the gavel in the House and Republican resistance remains a defining force in the Senate, frustrating Obama’s ambitious agenda.

How is this possible? National Republicans have waged an unrelenting campaign to exploit every weakness and anachronism in our electoral system. Through a combination of hyperpartisan redistricting of the House, unprecedented obstructionism in the Senate and racist voter suppression in the states, today’s GOP has locked in political power that it could never have secured on a level playing field.

Oops:

CBS News apologized this morning for airing the accusations of a now-apparently-fake Benghazi whistleblower, Dylan Davies.

Davies is the author of a new bombshell book accusing the Obama administration of massive security failures leading up to the fatal attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya in September of 2012.

Davies repeated his fanciful story on this past Sunday’s 60 Minutes television show, in which Davies claimed to have been at the Benghazi consulate during the attack, and heroically recounted how he climbed the compound’s 12 foot wall and clocked a terrorist with the butt of his rifle, and how he personally witnessed the charred remains of US Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack.

Seems you just cannot believe Republicans these days.
