“Working Together to Extend the Middle Class Tax Cuts”

From the White House weblog:

In this week’s address, President Obama urges Congress to act now on one thing that everyone agrees on — ensuring that taxes don’t go up on 98 percent of all Americans and 97 percent of small businesses at the end of the year. On Friday, the President had a constructive meeting with Congressional leaders on finding ways to reduce our deficit in a way that strengthens our economy and protects our middle class, and he looks forward to working together to get this done.

Political capital

Just two days following the presidential election of 2004, George W. Bush famously stated “I earned capital in this campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it.”

The Republicans agreed with him. They stated that Mr. Bush had received a “mandate” and should now be free to govern in any way he wished.

Let’s compare, shall we?

In 2004, George W. Bush received 62,040,610 popular votes (50.73%). John Kerry received 59,028,439 popular votes (48.27%). In the Electoral College, Bush won 286 votes and Kerry won 251 votes.

Okay.

In 2012, Barack Obama received 61,910,594 popular votes (50.6%). Mitt Romney received 58,654,765 popular votes (47.9%). In the Electoral College, President Obama won 332 votes and Governor Romney won 206 votes.

So, if George W. Bush had political capital and a mandate in 2004, what must Barack Obama have in 2012?

Time to break out the crown.

“Extending Middle Class Tax Cuts to Grow the Economy”

From the White House weblog:

President Obama says that it’s time for Congress to pass the middle class tax cuts for 98 percent of all Americans. Both parties agree that this will give 98 percent of families and 97 percent of small businesses the certainty that will lead to growth, and so there is no reason to wait. On Tuesday, the American people voted for compromise and action, and the President calls on Congress to come together in that spirit to help create jobs and strengthen our economy.
