As the 2012 Republican National Convention winds down, there’s a question or two that keep popping into my mind:

What have the Republicans done in the past four years to fix the mess they created in the eight years prior? What makes anybody think they would do anything more in the coming four years?

Paul Ryan lied in his speech last night. There is no getting around that. (See link at bottom of previous post.) I am not watching Mitt Romney tonight, but it is hard to imagine he is doing any better.

P.S. Clint Eastwood? Really?

Be sure to read David Brooks’ definitive biography of “The Real Romney.” Here’s a bit to whet your appetite:

Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and several other swing states. He emerged, hair first, believing in America, and especially its national parks. He was given the name Mitt, after the Roman god of mutual funds, and launched into the world with the lofty expectation that he would someday become the Arrow shirt man.

Romney was a precocious and gifted child. He uttered his first words (“I like to fire people”) at age 14 months, made his first gaffe at 15 months and purchased his first nursery school at 24 months. The school, highly leveraged, went under, but Romney made 24 million Jujubes on the deal.

Mitt grew up in a modest family. His father had an auto body shop called the American Motors Corporation, and his mother owned a small piece of land, Brazil. He had several boyhood friends, many of whom owned Nascar franchises, and excelled at school, where his fourth-grade project, “Inspiring Actuaries I Have Known,” was widely admired.

The Romneys had a special family tradition. The most cherished member got to spend road trips on the roof of the car. Mitt spent many happy hours up there, applying face lotion to combat windburn.

The teenage years were more turbulent. He was sent to a private school, where he was saddened to find there are people in America who summer where they winter. He developed a lifelong concern for the second homeless, and organized bake sales with proceeds going to the moderately rich.

Click here to read the entire column. I hope you do. It comes a lot closer to the truth than what you are hearing this week at the Republican National Convention.

P.S. Speaking of truth, you must read this FOX News review of Paul Ryan’s acceptance speech last night: “Paul Ryan’s speech in 3 words.” Be sure to read the whole thing.

If Paul Ryan's mouth is open, he is lying.
If Paul Ryan's mouth is open, he is lying.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I watched the hour that the networks devoted to the Republican National Convention last night. I watched Ann Romney read the speech the Romney campaign had written for her. Why did she keep referring to her husband as Mitt Romney? Is that what she calls him at home? She really did not seem all that enthused about the whole thing. She saw her duty and she did it. Then Chris Christie got up and delivered his narcissistic rant. He really is a big boy, isn’t he? Really full of himself, that one. I thought he was never going to mention old Mitt.

On a scale of one to ten, I’d rate the evening about a two and a half.

I was going to save this cartoon by David Horsey for this week’s Friday Night Cartoons. It will still likely show up there, but I wanted to throw it in here due to its timeliness.

Click on it to view it full size.

Tonight it’s Paul Ryan’s turn then tomorrow night Mitt himself will take the stage. I can hardly contain my excitement.

I know that you have heard Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-MO) statement that women cannot get pregnant when they are raped because their bodies will not allow it. Today, he doubled down and stated that many women fake being raped just so they can get an abortion. Republicans have been falling all over themselves to denounce Mr. Akin’s ridiculous claims. Thing is, the things that Akin is saying are nothing new to Republicans. Rachel Maddow explains…

Amazing, isn’t it? Just further proof that Republicans have no scruples and they have no morals. They will say whatever they think you want them to say just to get you to vote for them. They think Americans are very stupid people. I hope we show them once and for all in this year’s elections that we are not.

President Obama on why we’ve come too far to turn back now:

We must also give our President a Congress with which he can work, and one that will work with him.
