I’m sure you’ve been hearing on the news about the partial shutdown at the Federal Aviation Administration. The news media has come up with the story line that it all has something to do with subsidies at rural airports. That is not the whole truth. The main issue in contention is the unionization of airline employees. The Republicans want to revise the union election rules so that when one is held anybody who does not vote is counted as a no vote. That, of course, is not how democracy works and the Democrats, rightfully, refuse to go along with it. So the Republicans, in one of their typical tantrums, are holding up the legislation that would fund the FAA and get it back into full operation. Congress has now left town for their August vacation without resolving this issue.

President Obama, prior to his Cabinet meeting today, had a few things to say about it…
