Next Wednesday, September 7 (see update below), will mark the return of Congress from its month long vacation. That night, President Obama will address a joint session of Congress. He will lay out his plans for creating jobs and speeding the economic recovery of the United States. He will ask Congress to work with him to accomplish these goals. This morning, speaking in the Rose Garden, he called on Congress to quickly pass a clean extension of key transportation programs. Here is video of this morning’s remarks…

We can hope that the Republicans in the House of Representatives and in the Senate will work with our President to achieve the goals he has and will put forth. I, myself, have my doubts. The Republicans have but one goal and it is not the betterment of our country. Their one and only goal is to ensure that Barack Obama does not serve a second term as President of the United States. To achieve that goal, they are more than willing to destroy this country. More than willing.

UPDATE: Speaker of the House John Boehner decided that Thursday, September 8, would be a better day for the President to address Congress. The President’s speech has been moved to Thursday, September 8. The Speaker’s schedule, after all, takes precedent over the President’s.

Here are three little charts that you may find handy the next time some Republican and/or Tea Partier confronts you about how much President Obama is spending or how the economy has gone downhill on his watch. You can click on them to make them bigger. The source of these charts is gpoaccess.gov. I thing they are fairly self-explaining.

“Coming Together to Remember”

From the White House weblog:

In this week’s address, President Obama called on the American people to come together in the spirit of service and remembrance as we approach the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks. All Americans can pay tribute to those who lost their lives during 9/11 by visiting Serve.Gov to find ways to help within their own communities. Through even the smallest of actions, we can reclaim the sense of unity that followed the attacks, and demonstrate that our sense of common purpose is just as strong today as it was ten years ago. Americans can once again come together to mark this solemn anniversary with service, and move towards a bright future as one nation.

GOP Emergency Meeting

Posted by at 18:38  Politics, Republicans
Aug 232011

Republicans are holding emergency meetings all over the country trying to figure out how to:

  1. Blame President Obama and/or the Democrats for the earthquake that struck the east coast today and
  2. Take credit for the fall of Moammar Gadhafi (or however you spell it) in Libya.

You watch. They will be doing both within the next day or two, if they haven’t already.

This is old news to us Texas folk, but it might be news to some of you out there in the rest of the country who are new meeting our governor for the first time…

Over three terms in office, Mr. Perry’s administration has doled out grants, tax breaks, contracts and appointments to hundreds of his most generous supporters and their businesses. And they have helped Mr. Perry raise more money than any politician in Texas history, donations that have periodically raised eyebrows but, thanks to loose campaign finance laws and a business-friendly political culture dominated in recent years by Republicans, have only fueled Mr. Perry’s ascent.

“Texas politics does have this amazing pay-to-play culture,” said Harold Cook, a Democratic political consultant.

Mark Miner, a spokesman for Mr. Perry, said there was no connection between Mr. McHale’s contributions and the grant to G-Con. He said that the purpose of the state money was to create jobs and that it was appropriate for Mr. Perry to appoint people who support his vision and policies to state oversight posts.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. You all have a lot to learn about our boy James Richard Perry. Have fun.

“Getting America Back to Work”

From the White House weblog:

In this week’s address, President Obama spoke to the American people from the Corner Country Farm in Alpha, Illinois on the need to create jobs and strengthen the economy. President Obama reminded the American people that we still have the best workers, entrepreneurs, and students in the world, and called on both parties to come together and act on a series of steps we can take right away to get our nation back to work.
