“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better.” — Republican Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer of South Carolina.

UPDATE: Mr. Bauer has apologized for the above remarks. Says he is not against animals.

  6. Is this guy related to Jack Bauer?

His quote dredges up all kinds of warm memories of South Carolina where they carry this kind of kinder and gentler philosophy to its logical extremes.

I recall when Lake Hartwell was determined to be so polluted with PCBs that fish taken from it would not be safe to eat for 25,000 years, and rather than ban fishing, it was decided to put up signs warning against eating the fish, because the poor folks couldn’t afford not to eat them.

This is a state, by the way, that had a law on the books as recently as the sixties that made it against the law for a white and a black to look out the same window, which was used to defend segregation as an act of official kindness to protect blacks from their ignorance of the law.
